Our "track" is currently a dirt oval in a field. It's slimy and unusable when it's damp and gritty dirty when it's windy. So many of our track kids feel that they're not a valued part of our system because they're the only group that doesn't have facilities to practice! It used to be that most students practiced on similar surfaces, but now our students are at a distinct disadvantage because other schools have advanced and we have not. Learning hurdles, relays, sprinting out of blocks, and vaulting is extremely difficult in Palmer due to the nature of the sport and the physical and technological needs associated with being competitive in those areas. Technically we have throwing and jumping areas that work but students need to remove sand burrs from unpleasant places on a daily basis because of the environment they're working in. And then there are the young professionals and parents as well as the newly retired who need a safe place to walk! This would mean the world to our community!
I'm a track Mom who heard her state qualifying daughter complain about the conditions on our track. It's hard to practice most days because the sandy soil was either blowing in her face and eyes or wet and too muddy to use. And that was before the shelter belt was removed making the conditions even more extreme currently! Our kids deserve better than this.. Wind erosion is scooping out the track surface making it lower than the existing ground. Students who get off course struggle with ankle strains. It's nearly impossible to practice effective starting block usage or hurdles. There's not enough soil stability to get a grip when accelerating. Please consider helping our kids. Cathy Blauhorn
