Imagination Library Program

A nonprofit organization

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library helps children be successful in school by building a library of their own before they start kindergarten.

The Heartland United Way's goal is to help all children be successful in school by ensuring a free age-appropriate book is mailed each month to enrolled children ages 0 to 5 years. The Imagination Library program encourages parents to be their child's best first teacher by also providing reading hints and learning suggestions.

In 2025, the Heartland United Way served 3,442 enrolled children in the Imagination Library Program in Hall, Hamilton, Howard, and Merrick Counties.

$30 SPONSORS A CHILD FOR A YEAR

Testimonials

"We didn't have a lot of money then and we couldn't afford to buy lots of books. We also had an immune compromised premie who couldn't go to the library storytimes. We loved going to the mailbox and getting our new book each month and were sad when it ended. Imagination Library is a gift. I'm so grateful that it existed when we needed it most." - Teresa Segelken, Parent

"Whenever I’d see it in the mail or I felt something heavy in the mail I’d immediately just look at the book and I’d stall in the driveway and then I’d have to remember to go back into the house.” - Vandaley Foulk, Imagination Library Graduate

"The nearest library is 10 miles away and so for a family who has to work, both parents work in the household I think having a book in your hand, being sent to you is wonderful." - Natalie Foulk, Parent
