The Foundation funds raised on Go Big Give Day 2017 will benefit the Wood River Elementary School, A proposed playground project will update this heavily-utilized open space with safety and design improvements including updated child friendly ground cover under the equipment, handicap accessible play ground equipment, and plants for a "child friendly" play area. The proposed updated space will help make the playground more inviting and a safer place for child's play. Other updates being considered include a new welcome sign by the school entrance and playground equipment upgrades. Contributions to the Foundation on Go Big Give Day will help to leverage other private funds and result in an important project that benefits an entire generation of children in Wood River.
Wood River Community Centennial Foundation was formed in 1984 by a group of civic-minded individuals investing the remaining funds from the Community Centennial Celebration.These individuals had a vision that by combining and sharing their resources their philanthropic efforts would have an increased impact in the community The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors (all volunteers). The Foundation has been the recipient of funds that it has in turn awarded back to the Wood River area $530,690.00 in the form of 245 grants valued at $351,500 and 404 scholarships valued at $179,190.00 for Wood River Rural High seniors. The Foundation has helped facilitate positive growth for a town relative to its population but one that still has many needs as most small towns in Nebraska do.
